Students should reflect on their learning and monitor their progress to succeed. My approach to this is multifaceted. My students monitor their understanding through daily clicker questions and online weekly homework. These assessments are important, as they allow them to test their understanding in a low-pressure setting before the unit exam.
My students also complete mini reflective journals to consider what they know before class, wanted to learn, and what they did learn during each week of instruction. Both of these approaches give students an opportunity to identify where they are struggling while they can still study. These techniques also help me as an instructor gauge student understanding and adjust my instruction accordingly.
